Why is the COP Summit happening?
- COPs act as the main worldwide discussions where countries gather to battle the environment emergency on the whole.
- The primary plan remembers significant conversations for essential issues, for example, limiting the worldwide temperature climb to 1.5 degrees Celsius, supporting weak networks influenced by environmental change, and accomplishing net-zero emanations by 2050.
- World leaders come together to collaborate on finding solutions to combat climate change at the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Currently, 198 Parties to the Convention comprise 197 countries and the European Union, resulting in nearly universal membership.
Importance of the COP28
- The objective is to restrict the worldwide temperature increase to 1.5 deg C.
- In 2015, all nations consented to satisfy this commitment in Paris.
- Achieving the 1.5 deg C target is essential to preventing the worst effects of climate change.
- Nonetheless, current projections indicate that global warming by 2100 is expected to be between 2.4 and 2.7 degrees Celsius.
Global climate solutions fund
- A $30 billion fund for "global climate solutions" was announced by the host United Arab Emirates (UAE), in part to ease the fears of developing nations who are trying to secure financing to offset the effects of climate change events while demanding responsibility from the developed world for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions.
- That came after an unanticipated early accord in which nations contributed $420 million to a fund for countries experiencing climate change-related hardships.
- Furthermore, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, "cannot save a burning planet with a fire hose of fossil fuels"
